CLASSIFICATION OF ROCKS
DEFINITION OF ROCK:- A rock is solid mass or aggregate of minerals matter.
CLASSIFICATION OF ROCKS:-
I. Geological Classification →
1.Igneous Rock:- Rocks are formed by cooling and solidification of magma & lava.
- Plutonic(Intrusive)
- Volcanic(Extrusive)
Example:- Granite,Dolomite,Basalt,Trap,Pegmatite
2.Sedimentary rock:-Formed by weathering action of existing rock or by decomposition of soil particles.
- Clastic(Mechanical)
- Chemical
- Organic
Example:-Gravel,Sand Stone,Lime Stone,Shale,Gypsum,Lignite.
3.Meta-Morphic rock:-Both Igneous and Sedimentary rock goes under high pressure and temperature and formed Meta-Morphic rock.
Example:-Marble(Made from Limestone),Slate(Made from Granite),Quartz(Made from Sandstone),Laterite(Made from Basalt).
II.Physical Classification→
1.Stratified Rock:-Rock showed layered Structure.
Example:-Sand Stone,Lime stone,Slate.
2.Unstratified Rock:-It's a complicated structure which is cannot easily split into thin slab.
Example:-Granite,Trap,Marble.
III.Chemical Classification→
1.Calcareous Rock:- Calcium carbonate is predominated in this type of rocks.
Example:- Marble,Limestone.
2.Argillaceous Rock:- Clay and Alumina is the main content of these rocks.
Example:-Slate,Mudstone,Laterite
3.Silicious Rock:- silica is their main component.
Example:-Sand stone,Trap,Quartz,Granite.
Example:- Marble,Limestone.
2.Argillaceous Rock:- Clay and Alumina is the main content of these rocks.
Example:-Slate,Mudstone,Laterite
Example:-Sand stone,Trap,Quartz,Granite.
